Nice to meet you!
My legal name is Karen (for any forms you might be filling out), but I go by “Kat”. My last name recently changed from “Schussman” to “Bassa”, so if you see any combination of Karen/Kat and Schussman/Bassa in your doula search, that’s me!
Hello! First of all, I’d like to congratulate you for making it to this page. Childbirth is a journey, and by being here, you have decided to take that journey into your own hands.
Nothing would make me happier than to help you have the best birthing experience possible. I am told that I have a light, calm, uplifting presence, which I would love to bring to your delivery room. My practice is LGBTQ2S+ inclusive, as I am dedicated to helping people from every walk of life receive quality care. I am a certified birth doula through DONA International. Additionally, I am certified in trauma informed care as well as perinatal mood disorders. I am trained in comfort measures such as rebozo use, position shifts, hip and back pressure, light aromatherapy, and the fetching of popsicles (to name a few). I also provide information and comfort to any partners, if applicable. Currently, I am taking classes to become certified as a childbirth educator as well!
I studied cognitive science at UC Berkeley, took a wide variety of classes at DVC, worked as a swim coach for a very long while, and finally discovered the world of the doula. Even at Cal I was interested in birth, taking classes and volunteering at the UCSF low-cost infertility clinic, but I was not satisfied with the relatively hands-off approach of the OB/GYN or even nurse-midwife paths. The role of a doula was made for me. As a doula, I get to spend real, significant time with families, and provide care outside of a strictly medical setting.
Whether or not you decide to contact me, I wish you the absolute best in your journey!
